Cornered: 14 Stories of Bullying and Defiance

‘It does not necessarily take a fist to create a punch in the gut.’

12661669

‘This fourteen-story YA fiction anthology delves into the experience of being bullied—socially, emotionally, physically, psychologically, and sexually. The school hallways, walks home, and house walls are no longer the boundaries for intimidation and harassment. With the rapid-fire response time of social media and smartphones, bullying has lost all limits, and the lines among truth, lies, and real accountability have become blurred.’

Cornered includes works from

Rhoda Belleza, Kirsten Miller, Mayra Lazara Dole, Matthue Roth, Sheba Karim, Kate Ellison, Jennifer Brown,Brendan Halpin, Jamie Adoff, Elizabeth Miles, David Yoo, James Lecesne, Josh Berk, Lish McBride, Zetta Elliott

I originally had this shelved on Goodreads as ‘ya-general’, but I had to add it to my ‘ya-horror’ shelf as well. ‘Cornered’ is pretty far out of my genre comfort zone, but it horrified me on a different level.

I’ve read a lot of (IMHO) outstanding fictional books about bullying –
THE 8th by Matt Shaw, JEREMY by Matt Hickman, MY BEAUTIFUL SUICIDE by Atty Eve,  RAGE by Stephen King, and most recently RAGE by Kimberly A. Bettes. (just to name a few). I think ‘Cornered’ hurt a little deeper because the stories lacked the gratifyingly bloody revenge from the victim(s).

I have the outline prepared, so BOLO for full review & author info.

I came across an article I posted in 2013 when I searched for keyword word ‘bully’, and I want to share it again now. Please check it out when you have the time.

The Lonely Psychopath: A New Psychological Horror from Matt Shaw

The Lonely Psychopath: A Psychological Horror by Matt Shaw

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

29893694

This story was everything I hoped for, and more.

I’ve always empathized with a certain British serial killer, (view spoiler), feeling more pity than hostility for him, and his actions. It feels like The Lonely Psychopath: A Psychological Horror was written by him, and it shredded me.

The main character’s first interaction with a homeless man almost had me in tears – for both the homeless man (for what he’s just gone through), AND for the main character -Dennis. It shows what a kind heart Dennis really does have, and it helps express just how sad and lonely he is.

This is not a ‘diary of a serial killer’ book, or a killer’s log book, so don’t pick it up if that’s what you’re in the mood for right now. (Try Don’t Read or Diary of a Dead Man: The final thoughts of Ed Boothe).
The Lonely Psychopath: A Psychological Horror is the emotional journey of a sad and misunderstood man.

Trying to make it through his existence is a daily struggle for Dennis, until a very random encounter with a homeless man. This new bromance could very well be the first thing to ever make Dennis truely happy.

One thing is for sure… it is going to change his life forever.

THE FUNERAL: An Extremely Twisted SHORT STORY by Matt Shaw

“Before a funeral, there needs to be a death.”

The Funeral. cover

⋆⋆⋆⋆⋆

WARNING:

This is A SHORT STORY. It is intended for KU members who have been requesting short, sick, bedtime stories. As part of KU they are able to download this title for free.  If you wish for a longer story to read, do not purchase any of the F*cked-Up Shorts titles.  A good place to start would be The Black Cover Books (for lovers of extreme horror).

* What doesn’t kill you fucks you up mentally. *

The Funeral deals with grief, loss and redemption.
“You can expect twists & turns – be ready to feel a wide range of emotion.”
Never has a truer sentence been written.
Jason is a character that I can relate to.
He’s going through a bad time in his life right now. He is consumed with destructive thoughts, and wrestling with personal demons. Throughout the entire story I found myself laughing at one sentence, close to tears in the next sentence, and nodding my head in agreement at another.
Jason answers a late night phone call that gives him an ‘unexpected distraction’ from his self destructive thoughts, and it’s time for our second ride on that roller coaster!
It is so easy to see parts of myself in Jason, and I’m sure I’m not the only one who will feel this way.

I often find myself wondering if parts of certain stories are based on real events in the author’s life. I did that a lot in this book, especially when Jason thought about moments of happiness that the he shared with his mom. (Matt – go hug your mom!) Not every memory is a great one, there are regrets – just like real life.

The ending was a very unexpected script twist! Trust me… this is one that you wont see coming.

*BONUS POINTS for the ‘failed gas oven suicide attempt’!!
(Depression + OCD = hilarity!)
*EVEN MORE BONUS POINTS for Jason’s reasons to pass on each method on the internet’s ‘top ten’ list.

BUCKET LIST by Dawn Cano

This is a book of extreme horror.

Please do not purchase if you are easily shocked or offended.

BucketList

 5/5 Revenge Stars

⋆⋆⋆⋆⋆

Let’s talk about this as the people we really are deep down inside,  not the everyday face we project to strangers and coworkers.  We are the readers, the writers, and the lovers of true horror – so, let’s not pretend that we don’t have a rough outline of what we would like to do in any number of different situations. We’ve watched enough CSI and Forensic Files to help us feel pretty confident about our chances of getting away with… things – even our host Bill Curtis would agree! 😉

What would you do if you found out that your spouse was cheating on you?

What if it wasn’t a ‘just’ a one night stand, but a three month affair?

What if you found out that your lying, cheating spouse had a three month affair with someone who infected them with HIV, and they’ve lovingly shared it with you?

Mike Hickman is pondering these exact thoughts in Dawn Cano’s new short BUCKET LIST.  Needless to say… Mike is pissed!  He is going to make sure that his wife Emilia dies a very slow, and very painful death. He thinks “she owed me”, well… she sure is gonna pay!  Like us, Mike has watched a fair amount of horror movies and read a metric fuck-ton of horror books – so he has some pretty nifty ideas in store for his loving wife.  He even pulls out a recent title from one of his favorite extreme horror authors to use as a guide… this is gonna be FUN!

Our Dawn has become one hell of an author!  Her work leans a little more towards the extreme horror side, but she is writing great books without compromising her stories for mere shock value.  Another thing that I appreciate while reading Dawn’s work… whether she’s hidden something in a little quote that only a select few will ‘get’ right away, christened her characters with noteworthy names, or just taken the direct route and specifically named other authors and/or books… she ‘pays tribute’ to the people that have influenced her, and helped get her to where she is today. I think that is awesome, and it gives me a warm fuzzy ❤

I cannot wait to see what else she has in store for us!

New Holiday Horrors!

Need something new to read over the holidays?

Here are two new releases that I’m very excited about, and just bought them both…

William Malmborg’s Santa Took Them
feels like a Christmas-y version of HALLOWEEN – I can’t wait to read it.  Here’s a quote from one Amazon reviewer – “Santa Took Them is a fun horror read for the season.”

Christmas Eve 2005. Eight year old Michelle Harper is the only survivor in a horrific massacre that has left her four siblings decapitated, and her mother slowly dying as her innards ooze out onto the second floor landing, the words SANTA TOOK THEM written in blood on the bedroom wall.

Ten years later, having been released from a psychiatric hospital for children, Michelle disappears, her uncle and his girlfriend found hacked to death with a knife before being decapitated, the words SANTA TOOK THEM once again written in blood on the wall.

Dr. Samantha Loomis had no plans for the holidays, and was hoping to spend the time simply relaxing in her home. That all changes when the police begin asking her questions about Michelle, questions that make it fairly clear that they believe her to be guilty of the recent slayings.

No one in Holly Brook, IL has forgotten the horror that unfolded on Christmas Eve all those years ago, and now, as a terrifying blizzard descends upon the small isolated town, and teens begin disappearing one by one, it looks as if that gruesome night was only the beginning.

Matt Shaw’s A Christmas Cackle: F*cked-Up Festive Shorts is from his Fucked Up Shorts collection – written mainly for KU subscribers, but still a steal at $.99! (IMO: All the books in the white cover series are worth owning!)

“These Christmas short stories are for hardcore horror fans.”

Christmas is a time for love and peace and…. oh, bollocks to that! Bah Humbug and all that! Give me Halloween over Christmas any time! Think of me as The Grinch! Think of me as Scrooge! Think of me as the miserable git who won’t be buying you a present this year because… Well…. You don’t deserve one and I am tighter than a duck’s arse! And – as for this book – think of this as short stories based around Christmas in typical Matt Shaw style. An ‘up yours’ to the festive period containing dark tales of horror and twists that you don’t see coming no matter how many Shaw books you have read.

Contained within this book:

The Night Before
Marley
The Snowman
Author Facts (based around Christmas no less)
Krampus

And the short story “This is HORROR” which introduces you to a key character coming in 2016…

PLEASE NOTE: There is VERY bad language in this book. If easily offended – do yourself a favour and sod off. This book isn’t for you.

What are you reading over the holidays?

SNUFF: A F*cked Up Short by Matt Shaw

 ⋆⋆⋆⋆⋆

WARNINGS:

“This is A SHORT STORY. It is intended for the members of Kindle Unlimited who have been requesting short, sick, bedtime stories. As part of Kindle Unlimited they are able to download this title for free. If you wish for a longer story to read, please do not purchase any of the ‘F*cked-Up Shorts’. ”

SNUFF is loosely based on Dan Brownlie‘s idea for a faux snuff film (‘2 Girls, 1 Victim’ – screenplay also written by Matt Shaw).

Expect twists galore and sheer brutality!

Nikki and Jamie have taken SNUFF mainstream* – serving up punishment when the court system fails, and vigilante justice has never been sexier!

*Well, as mainstream as you can be online without getting caught. There are actually only a select few who know of the show, each member personally invited.

Tonight’s episode of ‘Two Girls, One Victim’ has a very special guest – a rapist named Jack Goodall. Specific tools chosen just for the guest of honor are laid out,  and gleaming under the set’s lights. Pliers, a hammer, nails, screws, hacksaws, piano wire, rope, duct tape, an adult sex-toy, and what appeared to be a small bottle of lube. Things might get messy, and the members are definitely going to get their money’s worth from this show!

You can find Snuff: An Extreme Horror SHORT STORY
on Amazon, and Goodreads.

WATCHING, WAITING: A F*cked Up Short by Matt Shaw

 ⋆⋆⋆⋆⋆

Matt Shaw is known for his extreme stories. He enjoys pushing boundaries and making people feel uncomfortable. Usually. This is not one of those tales. There is not much blood and guts. Some tales just do not need it. There are, though, twists and turns aplenty…

Will has only one thing on his mind… revenge.

He stalks Travis in the shadows, watching… waiting…

I thought I knew where this story was going, but I was wrong! This is a heart-wrenching short – love, loss, and not knowing how to go on once the unthinkable happens. Is there anything that can ever make you feel better – revenge? Forgiveness?

This was a hard journey to take.

You can find Watching, Waiting: A SHORT Story on Amazon and Goodreads.

TED: A F*cked Up Short by Matt Shaw

“Today was a good day.” ~ Ted

COVER.Shaw.TED⋆⋆⋆⋆⋆

WARNINGS:

This is A SHORT STORY. If you wish for a longer story to read, do not purchase any of the F*cked-Up Shorts titles.

“TED is an extreme character.  He is a racist, ignorant piece of shit. The views he expresses within this story DO NOT reflect the views of the author.  And fear not, he hets what he deserves in ROTTING DEAD F*CKS.” ~ms

“TED is featured heavily in ROTTING DEAD F*CKS by Matt Shaw.  You don’t need to read R.D.F.  first. This is a standalone short offering more from the character.”

Since the books in the White Cover Collection are short stories, I can’t go into a lot of detail without fear of ruining them for you.  It’s not just about giving away the ending – there is so much awesome jam packed into each short that I don’t want to give much of anything away!!

I do know that Matt has verified my reservation in Hell with this story!
Yeah, Ted is a piece of human garbage, but some of his attempts at humor, (and some of his attempts at humanity), had me giggling like a kid who is secretly listening to his grandparent’s Red Foxx albums in the basement!  Wrong on so many levels.
But… before you judge me, let me try to explain using the cat joke (which also had me laughing, heartily) here as an example. I would never hurt an animal. Ever. I know, for a fact, that Matt is an animal lover. He has a cat named Nellie, a lizard named Larry, and doesn’t even like to kill spiders – even though there isn’t much in the world that he hates more than the eight legged freaks.  (I swear that I’m not a stalker. This comes from years of being friends on Facebook, and an indepth author interview here on BBBB. Honest.)  So – when I learned how to make a cat go ‘woof’… I accidentally giggled before I made an audible groan at the bad joke.  THAT DOESN’T MEAN THAT I THINK THAT WAY, and it doesn’t mean that I would ever try to make a cat go ‘woof’. But, it was kinda funny.
So are some of Ted’s thoughts.

Ted’s not ALL bad. Mostly. But not all.  He did leave me with a couple pieces of wisdom…
“If she thinks so little of herself, how am I expected to think highly of her?” ~ Ted
“For all we know, I am the sane one and it’s everyone else who has a serious case of the ‘fuck-ups’.”
~ Ted
“Just a hooker. Another dead hooker.” ~ Ted

As an added surprise… I also learned about many different weird and wonderful sex acts that a lot of people have no idea about! I’ll admit that I did already know what The Donkey Punch is, (don’t judge me!), but The Strawberry Shortcake, and The Alabama Hot Pocket were new!! I’ve also noticed a reoccurring ‘trick’ that has popped up in a couple of the Fucked Up Shorts! Do with that information what you will – I just made a mental note of it.

I’m enjoying the books in the White Cover Collection. Chances are… if you’re already a fan of Matt, you’ll enjoy them, too.

You can meet TED through Amazon, and Goodreads.
